| Surf Hostel, NoordwijkNoordwijkThe coastal town of Noordwijk has a natural sand beach that stretches for 13km. This combination of stunning shoreline and a consistent westerly breeze thumping the beach makes Noordwijk a popular location for advanced surfers to tune their techniques. There are no man eating sharks, reefs, rocks or other life-threatening obstacles in the water around Noordwijk, so you can relax and enjoy yourself. The beaches are never over crowded, and so the environment is suitable for beginners to study the basics of the sport. The best waves of the day occur 2 hours before high tide, generally after 2pm. The most surfer friendly waves are between 1m and 2.5m (3-8ft) in height, big enough to pull off a few tricks, and if you are very lucky you may even catch one of the tubes that we get here once in a while. In the summertime, and even when the weather is roasting hot, Noordwijk beach is relatively peaceful, and not teeming with tourists like many other surf spots. However, if you fancy avoiding civilization entirely, go out onto the water with your board after sundown for some night surfing! The only sound you will hear is the pounding of your heartbeat and the crashing of the waves as you paddle out into the darkness under cover of twinkling stars. All your senses will awaken as far off city lights flicker on the distant horizon, and you ride darkened waves for as long as is necessary. Or you could go out for an early-morning ride, when the water surface is clean and the waves smooth. Conditions in the evenings are similar, but you get to experience the spectacular Noordwijk sunset. Many people gather down at the beach to watch the sun set in a carnival of different shades and colours. After a while the sun plunges into the sea, and out of sight, continuing its journey across the North Sea, en route toward the east coast of England. During the winter time the North Sea can get a little chilly, but the waves are still great. It is a good idea to wear a thickened wetsuit, one with a cap and boots will help protect your body from the cold. After a day out on the water the Flying Pig Surf bar is a great place to meet fellow Surfers and water sports enthusiasts. You can bore the locals with news of your first tube, or just marvel at their leathery skin! Either way you will always be amongst first-class people, and in the right place to book your next lesson! So get yourself down to the Flying Pig Beach Hostel and discover the true essence of freedom!
