| The first time that I stayed at the hostel (not in high saison) I really enjoyed my stay in the hostel: good atmosphere, clean bathrooms, comfortable beds. That is why I convinced my friend to come with me the second time. However, this time we had a terrible stay: we booked a seperate room for the two of us because she wanted to have a private bathroom. We payed a lot of money for this room (37,5 euro per night) but it was not worth this at all: there was noise all night long (not only the music from the bar but also people that were sitting on the deck which was right on top of the room), the bathroom was not private and very dirty because it was the place where slightly drunk bartenders came to piss and the breakfast was not as good as I remembered. I don't mind all these things if I am paying a hostel price. But if I am paying almost as much as a bed and breakfast I expect a little more quality. | People formed groups, so it was hard to socialize, particularly with those already there, but i suppose you cannot influence guest's wants and behaviour much. As a hospitality student, the beach hostel is running into several critical issues that should be considered for legal and health safety. The Kitchen needs to be cleaned thoroughly, removeany moth, grim, dirt etc. The cheese should not be left out in the warm (perhaps keep a few refridgerated and restock if necessary). The rooms are in need of refurbishment (some parts looked well aged and dangerous), there is little competition around, however, it will be help spread more positive word of mouth and helps marketing/advertising. | When I stayed at the Beach Pig over 2 years ago I was expecting that it would be the same culture of pot smokers as the downtown and Uptown Pigs are. To my surprise, it was far from that. The Beach Pig comes nowhere near the Uptown and Downtown when Pot smoking is involved. Smoking pot at the Hostels is one of the main reasons why I keep coming back to the Pig. However when I visited the Beach hostel for the first time nobody told me that Noordwijk was a place where pot smoking was not encouraged and not supported and uncommon. My experience included innocently lighting a joint at the bar at the beach, while enjoying my beer when suddenly without warning almost the entire staff came crashing on top of me to extinguish the joint. Some of the staff was quite drunk at that point, since I arrived late at night, and their efforts at turning out my joint turned into a disturbing and quite an abusive experience as I thought a fight might break out because of it. Then, when they realized how completely taken by surprise I was by the whole issue they instructed me to go outside if I wanted to smoke pot, on the wooden platform in the back. Needles to say this made me feel very segregated and separated from the rest of the guests and the staff at the Beach Hostel. Moreover, it made me feel quite embarrassed because now everyone saw me in a bad light since I was a pot smoker while they were not. In short, smoking pot at the Beach Hostel immediately turned me into a social outcast. In conclusion, my experience at the Beach Pig, vis a vis pot smoking has left me quite shaken and very upset and very hesitant to revisit the Beach Pig anytime soon. I must admit the above is an old story. Maybe things have changed since then, but I still believe that for someone who is very into smoking pot I would still not advise them to visit the Beach Hostel to stay there today. Do you agree with me? I agree that only visiting the Netherlands to smoke Pot is a pathetic excuse for anyone, but for me it is much more complicated than that. I absolutely adore the feeling of smoking pot in public, in-front of others, and not in secret without fear of incarceration. Sure, I get stares from people and some people looking down on me for smoking pot, but I can smoke without fear of the Police and that is a big factor when enjoying your smoke! Also, I believe that socializing with people while being stoned, as compared to be drunk, is so much more enjoyable for me. We tourists understand that Noordwijk is not Amsterdam. We do not expect to see the Red light district at the Beach, nor do we want to! However, as a tourist, I was not aware that what goes on in Amsterdam stays in Amsterdam, such as pot smoking for example. In the future I suggest that you do include a small policy on Pot smoking at the Beach Pig. I have noticed that you already included a small policy on pot smoking on your web site, indicating what times we can light up and under what circumstances. But I suggest you take it a further step and make it official by putting up a sign or a poster over the bar, as a guide. The poster in a fun way can guide the unsuspecting tourist on what proper Pot smoking etiquette should be when staying at the Beach Pig, or in Noordwijk in general. I think this will help all the guests and staff to avoid any misunderstandings in the future. I think it would also make the experience of visiting the Beach much more enjoyable and friendly especially for hardcore Pot smokers like me who cannot stand to be separated from their Pot for even 5 minutes while visiting the Netherlands! | From the description on the website I was picturing a hostel right on the beach with beach huts or something, which isn't really what it was like! A lot of the guests were very young and it got a bit frat-partyish on the second night with drinking games, skinnydipping and people throwing up. I'm only 25 and like to have a good time but found this a bit childish! | Okay, so basically I hate people like I'm about to be, but I really had a bad experience so I want to be as honest as possible. I've stayed at the Downtown Hostel twice before and really enjoyed it. This was a totally different experience. The space was way too cramped for so many people. It seems strange that the Downtown Hostel has so much more space when it's right in the middle of the city. There's no place to just hang out without people being on top of you at all times (except the roof but it gets windy up there). The staff was mostly unhelpful. Stoners are great, but just not when you actually want things done. The person who drove the van from the Downtown Hostel to the Beach was so stoned that she almost killed two passengers and injured another. She paid no attention to the fact that when she stopped to pick people up, she had to wait for them to be fully in the van before starting to move again. She did this twice more times before reaching the Hostel. I hate to judge a stoner, but girl, you gotta get your shit together. She's kind of a menace. It might be wise not to advertise a shuttle ride which you may or may not survive. Otherwise, it was hard to tell who was actually working there and who was just visiting and the staff, when you could find them, couldn't usually answer questions. The shower room was flooded (like 2 inches of water) for two days and no one did anything about it. It seems dumb to have a stoner hostel that is 30 minutes from the closest coffee shop and doesn't even allow you to smoke until 9pm (even pure). It sucks there's only one computer. The bed arrangement is ridiculous. At the downtown hostel you have assigned beds so you can leave your shit and no one's gonna take your bed. I went to another city for a day and someone had taken my bed. That's just so inconvenient and easily resolvable. The beach was fine, but the website made it sound like it was amazing and I never saw any of the activities that were mentioned (surfing, kite surfing, wind surfing, SNOWBOARDING HILL???, etc.) So basically I spent 40 euros a night at a place where it was impossible to hang out without feeling totally disgusting and violated or smashing your head on the bunk bed, the staff was too stoned to do their job, and the beach was unimpressive and freezing. | 07/03/2008 17:20:00 |

| I felt the staff behaved like people on a holiday and not like employees of a business. We had a private room but were interrupted four times one morning by people determined to clean. We told them it was fine but they seemed determined to annoy us. The shuttle is also challenging. Your literature says variously that it runs six times and four times a day. We were told that the shuttle was full and no others would operate but the shuttle driver was actually very charming and we did get on a the shuttle. | There was no lock on the door in the big basement room. It was rather dirty with quite a few flies. The staff played loud music late through the night that could be heard in the basement room. There were staffing issues surrounding the shuttle, so we had to pay to get to and from the hostel a few times which was a hassle. | The flying pig beach hostel lives up to the reputation that all the piggy hostels have. Everyone is made to feel super welcome, there's a great chill out space and loads of friendly people!
